How To Make An Antibacterial Mouthwash At Home

Mouthwash is a very useful product, mainly for those who fight against bad breath. Its main function is to reduce the presence of harmful bacteria in the mouth, many of which remain between the teeth without the brush being able to remove them.

It is advisable to use it every day as a complement to oral hygiene. In addition to avoiding halitosis, it is also useful to reduce those pathogens that can cause diseases.

However, due to its high price in the market, some prefer to do without it and look for other alternatives.

Luckily, with some natural ingredients, you can make homemade solutions that help treat this condition, thanks to its incredible properties.

What are the advantages of preparing a homemade mouthwash?

The ingredients used in its preparation are quite inexpensive.  They do not contain aggressive substances, so the teeth or gums will not be affected.

This type of method allows you to control the quality of the product, since you will know with certainty that it is 100% free of chemicals and other additives.

Baking soda mouthwash

Sodium bicarbonate is a great ally of oral health, because in addition to eliminating bacteria, it also helps to whiten teeth and eliminate bad breath.

This rinse is one of the most basic and inexpensive. It serves as a treatment against infections in the mouth.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of water (250 ml).
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda (5 g).
  • 3 drops of peppermint essential oils.

How to prepare it?

  • Put all the ingredients in a glass jar and shake it before using.
  • Gargle for 20 seconds, with the amount you consider necessary.

Apple cider vinegar mouthwash

The acids in apple cider vinegar are used to neutralize the bacteria that proliferate in the mouth and cause bad breath.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of water (250 ml).
  • 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (20 ml).

How to prepare it?

  • Dilute the apple cider vinegar in the cup of water and gargle with the product after brushing.

Berry, mint and rose petal mouthwash

The recipe for this mouthwash is a bit more complex than the previous ones, since it concentrates the properties of several healthy ingredients. 

Due to the antiseptic properties of mint, the concentrated aroma of berries and rose petals, you will get a solution that will give you excellent results.

Ingredients

  • 1 liter of water (1000 ml).
  • 5 tablespoons of juniper berries (50 g).
  • Mint leaves (to taste)
  • Rose petals (to taste).

How to prepare it?

  • Pour all the ingredients into a pot and heat them over medium heat, until they start to boil.
  • When the preparation is ready, let it rest and take it to the refrigerator.
  • Use about 20 ml of the liquid (2 tablespoons) in each rinse.

Clove and peppermint mouthwash

The combination of cloves with ingredients such as parsley and mint, make  a very complete oral hygiene product. It is an excellent ally thanks to the combination of antiseptic and aromatic properties.

Ingredients

  • 1 liter of water (1000 ml).
  • 1 tablespoon of cloves (10 g).
  • 2 sprigs of parsley.
  • Two tablespoons of cinnamon essence (10 ml).
  • 2 tablespoons of mint essence (10 ml).
  • ½ teaspoon of green food coloring (2 g).

How to prepare it?

  • Put the cloves and parsley in a cloth or gauze bag.
  • Bring the water to a boil and add the food coloring.
  • Once the first boil is over, insert the cloth bag and leave it on low heat for 10 more minutes.
  • Add the essences, boil a couple more minutes and let it cool.
  • Pass everything through a strainer and reserve the liquid for the daily rinse.

Eucalyptus mouthwash

The strong smell of eucalyptus has the ability to control bad odors such as those caused by halitosis. 

Its antibacterial action, enhanced with that provided by other ingredients, is quite useful for mouth care.

Ingredients

  • 1 liter of water (1000 ml).
  • A tablespoon of eucalyptus leaves (10 g).
  • 1 tablespoon of fennel leaves (10 g).
  • A tablespoon of rosemary leaves (10 g).
  • 1 tablespoon of mint (10 g).
  • A tablespoon of thyme (10 g).
  • 1 tablespoon of oregano (10 g).
  • A tablespoon of arnica flowers (10 g).
  • 1 stick of cinnamon.
  • Cloves (optional).

Preparation

  • Put the liter of water in a pot and put it to boil for a few minutes.
  • When it reaches its boiling point, reduce the heat and incorporate all the mentioned plants.
  • After about two minutes, lower the heat and let it cool.
  • Strain the liquid and use 15-20 ml (about two tablespoons) for each rinse.

Any of these options should be used between one and three times a day. Of course, to get good results, they must be supported by good brushing and flossing.
