Lemongrass Tea To Relieve Headaches And Migraines

Lemongrass tea is a natural remedy that popular wisdom proposes to reduce tension-related headaches. Therefore, many people have been encouraged to try it when they suffer from this discomfort.

The reason a drink is proposed for this type of pain is because drinking plenty of fluids contributes to relief. In other words, the better hydrated you are, the more likely relief is to come soon.

It is very interesting to know that according to a study carried out at the University of Griffith, in Australia,  lemongrass tea would be very suitable to relieve  high intensity headaches, since the drink would concentrate some compounds of the plant, which they would act as natural anti-inflammatories.

Let’s see more about this study and its relationship to said drink below.

Lemongrass tea is a healthy drink

The Cymbopogon plant is commonly known as “lemon grass” in Panama, although it also has other names, such as: lemongrass, lemongrass, lemon grass, lemongrass, citronella grass , among others.

The plant has a very pleasant, citrusy scent, as might be expected given its name and origin. With it a hydrating drink is prepared that can be comforting in case of having certain discomforts.

Aboriginal Australians have used lemongrass tea since time immemorial to relieve their discomfort, including headaches. Such was its popularity that various teams of researchers from various Australian universities decided to investigate further and see if its benefits were genuine.

The research was led by Professor Lyn Griffiths, Dr. Darren Grice, and Dr. Kelly Rogers. Here are their conclusions:

  • The lemongrass plant has the same effect as a pain reliever or anti-inflammatory in relieving headaches.
  • The study lasted 5 years and the findings were published in both complementary medicine academic journals, as well as alternative and natural medicine journals.

Headaches and migraines cause a type of abnormal activity in the brain. For example, the levels of serotonin, a hormone that regulates the function of platelets, are altered.

If there is an excess of platelets due to the alteration of serotonin, the risk of clot formation increases, which threatens the correct oxygenation of the brain. If the cerebral irrigation is compromised we can suffer cerebrovascular accidents.

Lemon grass tea would help regulate the functioning of platelets, preventing them from accumulating, because it also influences the control of serotonin release.

Serotonin also regulates mood, appetite, sleep, muscle contraction, and some of the cognitive functions, including memory. Thus, it is considered that drinking lemongrass tea can obtain these benefits.

What if the headache is very bad?

Faced with a headache of great intensity, it is best to follow the doctor’s instructions, since it will be essential to determine the cause well before proceeding to take any type of measure. Doing so could aggravate the discomfort and thereby increase the risk of suffering others.

Natural remedies should never replace the opinion of a health professional or their treatments. And if you want to resort to any of them, the ideal would be to consult with the professional.
