How To Make Your Own Homemade Scrubs?

Do you know the possible benefits of peels? We tell you how to prepare them at home, with natural ingredients.

The cells of our skin are continually renewed, and those that die remain on the surface until new ones replace them. With peelings (exfoliations) we can help regenerate the skin to make it smoother and firmer.

We explain some simple homemade recipes to make our own peels and also with some original touches to turn them into a surprising gift.

On the skin

The skin is not only a part of our body that must be taken care of for aesthetics. In fact, according to WebMD , it is the largest organ we have in our body, it regulates our temperature, allows us to have the sense of touch and relates us directly to the outside.

What is a peel ?

para-peels

A peel is an exfoliation of the outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, with different substances. Today many chemical peels are performed , however, there are also natural options like the ones we share with you in this article.

Why would it be convenient to do peelings ?

The outer layer of skin that we see on our body is actually an accumulation of dead cells that have been ascending and maturing from the inside until they reach the surface. We can say that every day we lose approximately between 30,000 and 40,000 cells, according to data from the American Academy of Dermatology .

Therefore, if we perform a peel on our skin from time to time , we could obtain the following benefits:

  • We would improve the appearance of new cells.
  • We would activate the formation of collagen.
  • We would improve blood flow.
  • We would help prevent wrinkles and sagging.
  • We would soften the skin.
  • We would allow the skin to breathe better through the pores.
  • We would help prevent and remove stains.
  • We would achieve a natural glow to the skin.

Dry Skin

Nor should abuse the peelings , as is necessary to respect the natural processes of cell regeneration. Therefore, we recommend doing a maximum of one a week.

What do we need?

Before preparing your homemade peel , consult a dermatologist. Remember that natural ingredients can also cause allergic reactions and although they are commonly used, not all of them have scientific support.

To prepare our natural peeling we will first need an ingredient that allows us to exfoliate. We will choose one of the following according to the area and the problem to be treated:

  • Bicarbonate: the softest and also with alkalizing function, the preferred for the skin and sensitive areas. Beware of this product! Sometimes it may not work or have adverse effects on the skin.
  • Sugar: medium intensity.
  • Coarse salt: interesting for less sensitive areas with circulation problems, cellulite, stretch marks, etc.

Once we have chosen one of these basic ingredients, we will add a vegetable oil. Our proposals are based on a study published in 2018, which indicates that the following oils would have antioxidant properties and could help to naturally moisturize the skin. However, more studies are needed.

  • If the skin is dry : olive and / or rosehip oil.
  • For combination and normal skin : coconut or sesame oil
  • Finally, for oily skin: aloe vera gel or coconut oil

To enhance its benefits and also the aroma, we can add a few drops of essential oils. Keep in mind that different properties are attributed to each oil, some scientifically based and others not.

  • Orange: antidepressant, invigorating
  • Lemon: purifying, cleansing
  • Geranium: to help regenerate the skin
  • Rosemary: to improve circulation
  • Tea tree: for skin with acne
  • Palmarrosa: for skin with significant acne

Preparation

To prepare the peeling we will simply mix the ingredients well. Then we will put them preferably in a glass jar that we can keep in a cool and dry place or in the fridge.

In addition, if we want to give an original touch and turn it into a gift, we can also add the following ingredients:

Stimulating peeling .

Ground cinnamon, ground ginger and a few drops of ylang-ylang essential oil. Cinnamon and ginger are attributed energetic properties, although there are no studies to prove this theory.

Peeling highly aromatic and refreshing

In addition to the essential oil of orange or tangerine we will add grated orange peel. The aroma that you will get will leave everyone with their mouths open.

Delicious peeling

We will add pure cocoa powder and a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Another simply wonderful combination.

Anti- acne peeling

The ingredients will be aloe vera gel, a little coconut oil and a few drops of essential oil of tea tree and palmrose. A study published in Clinical Pharmacology: Advances and Applications suggested that a combination of aloe vera and tea tree essential oil could help improve acne symptoms.

How to use?

  1. First, we will apply a little of the peeling on the previously washed area without drying it.
  2. Afterwards, we will massage gently in circles, covering the entire area to be treated and avoiding sensitive parts such as the eye contour. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends performing this massage for a maximum of 30 seconds.
  3. If we do the peeling on the thighs or buttocks, we can press a little harder until we notice that the circulation is activated.

The skin will be hydrated by the use of the oils. However,  if we have dry skin, we recommend moisturizing it again with a cream adapted to your skin type.
